Pampas pros
Decor for years
Pampas grass should last several years in your home. Sure, it isn’t indestructible, but caring for it is easier than just about any living plant.
Texture texture texture
The unique fluffy texture of pampas grass provides a great contrast to your other plants, smooth walls and furnishings, and minimal zoom backgrounds. Pro-tip: you can use a hairdryer on the lowest setting to amp up the fluff!
Neutral color palette
The light, natural, neutral colors of dried pampas grass work with any decor.
Instant bold statement
Go big and bold if you want to, incorporating a statement vase or playing with proportions. Added bonus: a large vase or planter is less likely to get knocked over by playful pets.
When to exercise caution mixing pampas with pets
Pampas isn’t food
As with any household plant (with the exception of cat grass), pampas grass is not meant to be ingested by pets. Exercise caution until you know how your pets will react to the dried grass, and remove it if they are at risk of eating it.
Quality caveat
You need to make sure that the grass you bring in to your home is sturdy, in good condition, and was properly dried and preserved. Mold or mess could result from poor quality pampas grass.
Pest potential
Because pampas grass started its life in nature, you’ll need to watch for pests just like when you bring any other plant into your home.
Avoid the hairspray hack
You may have heard that cheap hairspray will keep your preserved pampas grass looking fresh, but it may be toxic and aerosols aren’t good for your pets to inhale.
If you are having trouble with the dried plant shedding there are specially formulated hairsprays for animals which people use in dog and cat shows. I haven’t tried one myself but it may be worth experimenting with!
Another option is fake pampas grass which won’t deteriorate or shed but can still look great.
The verdict on pampas grass and pets
Live plants add a lot to a home such as a prayer plant that moves it leaves through the day or spider plant that spawns pups, but dried plants have a place as well. Your interest in dried pampas grass may be due to circumstances or because you’ve been inspired by a great looking instagram post. Whatever the reason, you and your pets can safely enjoy the addition of some pampas grass.
